If you’re like most of us, you have goals, thoughts, hopes and dreams floating around in your head; ideas of what you want to accomplish or where you want to go in life.
That’s good! The problem is that sometimes they stay there – the ideas, in our heads – and don’t go anywhere else.
And, when a desire remains only a thought and is not given substance, we fail to achieve it. In other words, we kill the dream.
So, how do you avoid becoming a dream murderer and instead, give substance (and life) to your dreams? Simple. You create a Vision Board!
What Is It?
Just in case you’ve not yet heard of vision boards (obviously you didn’t watch Oprah in the show’s last 10 years…), or you’ve heard of them, but don’t really know what they are, Vision Boards are, as the name implies, boards filled with ideas, your visions, of what you want your life to be.
What you want you to be. The content is totally up to you, with the only requirement being that it inspires you to keep reaching for the goals and objectives you’ve set to create the life you desire.
This can be in the form of photos, quotes, magazine cutouts, mementos, souvenirs – anything that visually reminds you of a goal that you want to achieve, whether it be a personal, professional, spiritual, relationship goal, etc.
How Does It Help?
Clarity
Taking the time to give names and descriptions to your desires will better define them for you. If you think, “I want to be happier”, that’s fine, but what, specifically, will bring you more happiness?
For some it may be a better job, for others, a new home, and for others, finishing a manuscript. Pinpoint your desires, write them down, and give them life.
Once you do, they become a real thing, instead of an abstract thought. Then add items to your board that represent that goal. Having a clear picture of where you want to be is half the distance of getting there.
Productivity
With the growth of technology and the media, we have become an extremely visual culture, moved and motivated by what we see.
Once your board is put together, display it prominently where you will see it daily.
Having a regular, visual reminder of your vision will keep it in the forefront of your mind, instead of on the sidelines, which can help you be more productive in making it come to pass.
Self-Esteem
Discouragement can be toxic when it comes to making your dreams a reality. Let your vision board be a reminder, not only of what you hope to accomplish, but also of what you’ve already done.
Celebrate your victories along the way by documenting them on your board (Five pounds lost, Ten pounds lost, TWENTY FIVE POUNDS LOST! WOOHOO!).
Seeing how far you’ve already come will boost your self-esteem and remind you that, Yes, you can!
As wildly successful as comedian, radio and TV personality Steve Harvey is, he still uses vision boards and highly recommends them when giving advice to people about working to achieve their desired life and career goals.
Remember, your board need not be static. It can (and should) change as your life changes and certain goals are achieved or evolve into something else.
It is a work in progress, just like you, and one that, just like you, will be a testimony to all the amazing things life can hold!
